I’m not a fan of citrus fragrances. I’m not sure why, but I find them too literal, self-congratulatory, and somehow at odds with my skin.
And yet, the top notes of Xerjoff’s Erba Pura are all citrus: Calabrian Bergamot, Lemon, and Sicilian Orange. But I don’t believe in fragrance pyramids — and not because of some bizarre conspiracy theory. Concentrations, combinations, and the way a fragrance evolves over time make every perfume so much more than top, heart, and base notes. And then there’s our own perception, which makes everything fluid, nuanced, and deeply personal.
You immediately notice an unexpected weightiness, a quality historically associated with luxury products — just think of the early days of laptops, when they were still considered exclusive items and small weights were sometimes added to their cases to create a greater perception of quality.
The cap immediately catches the eye: perfectly proportioned to the bottle, it turns out to account for much of the weight of this little masterpiece. Its shape is inspired by the Deshret, the ancient Red Crown of Egypt — as explained on the brand’s official website — and I like to think it may also be a nod to the Egyptian Museum in Turin, the hometown of Sergio Momo and Dominique Salvo, who founded the brand in 2007. I imagine them walking through the rooms of this extraordinary temple of culture, with the idea of Xerjoff already taking shape in their minds, when the representations of the Deshret suddenly spark that whirlwind of emotions you feel when you’ve finally found the exact idea you were looking for — butterflies in your stomach and the urgent need to grab a pen and paper and start drawing, designing, shaping.
After this little design digression, let’s move on to the spray: precise and finely misted, brief but effective. Perfectly balanced for a fragrance this powerful and long-lasting — any more than this, and it could become an almost intoxicating olfactory presence for those around us.
The fragrance keeps shifting, unfolding and evolving with every passing minute, surprising me with each new facet. The further it develops, the warmer its freshness and brightness become, as though we were watching a sunset: the light of the golden hour softens every edge, while the sun reflects off the windows of the surrounding houses, creating tiny flashes of dazzling orange light. This is the image that vanilla and amber bring to mind, forming a warm backdrop to the luminous notes of Mediterranean fruit. A perfect picture painted in colors that are soft yet radiant, warm yet wonderfully juicy.
The longevity and power of this fragrance are unmatched: it lingers on both skin and clothes, sometimes even after washing. In some ways, that kind of performance can feel almost binding, especially for someone like me who loves switching fragrances, but it’s undeniably impressive.
When Do I Wear This Perfume?
I reach for this fragrance from my collection when I feel completely like myself. It’s a perfume that makes me feel confident, and on those days when my self-esteem isn’t exactly at its highest, I feel like it makes me appear strong in the eyes of others. If it weren’t for this passion of mine and my habit of wearing something different every day, it would undoubtedly be my signature scent.
Once we stepped out of the shop, finally back in the cool air and satisfied at having completed what had seemed like an impossible mission, we climbed back onto the scooter: my mum happy to have given me something that had made my eyes light up, and me with my wrist pressed to my nose, trying to catch every possible facet of the fragrance, wearing the genuine smile of someone who had brought home not just a perfume, but the reward of a search.
**Inside every Xerjoff perfume box, you’ll find a small silk handkerchief woven in Como. The craftsmanship of this precious fabric has reached such exceptional levels here that it has become renowned worldwide, even earning its own dedicated institution: the Como Silk Museum.
